  • Secure your wired network
    (Note: these apply to wireless networks also)

    • If you don’t need to share printers and files across your
      network, turn off “File and Printer Sharing”.
    • Start/Control Panel/Network Connections
    • Right click Local Area Connection and select Properties
    • Clear the check mark next to File and Printer Sharing for
      Microsoft Networks
    • Click OK
  • Disable the Server service on each computer as this will prevent
    the automatic creation of administrative hidden shares.

    • Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
    • Scroll down until you find “Server”
    • Double click to open the Server Properties window
    • Using the dropdown, change Startup type to “Disabled”
    • Click OK
    • Close the Services window
  • Do not use the same name and password for the local
    administrator accounts.

    • Start/Control Panel/User Accounts
    • Open the Administrator account
    • Change the Password
